Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Spring

Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Performed in Spring, TX

Athletic man on running path leaning over with back pain

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a surgical procedure aimed at removing a source of nerve compression in the spine, then stabilizing a section of the lower back to help alleviate pain during movement. “Anterior” indicates the procedure is performed through the front of the body, “lumbar” is the lower back and “interbody” refers to the space between two vertebrae, which is where the surgery takes place.

If you are considering an anterior lumbar interbody fusion or another type of spine surgery, you can feel confident entrusting your care to Dr. R. Alexander Mohr, a fellowship-trained, board-certified spine surgeon who practices near Spring, Texas. A master of ALIF and other complex surgical procedures, Dr. Mohr also provides conservative treatment options for low back pain, and he will suggest surgery only when he believes it is truly necessary, and only after exploring all appropriate non-surgical options.

The Process of Spinal Fusion

Over time, the naturally spongy discs that separate the spinal vertebrae gradually deteriorate, losing both height and water content. As the discs begin to “collapse,” they may bulge into the spinal canal, which houses the spinal cord and sensitive nerve roots. Excess tissue in the spinal canal can painfully press on spinal nerves. If the resulting discomfort is severe and does not improve with conservative treatment, an anterior lumbar interbody fusion may be considered. This procedure involves:

  • Making an incision on one side of the abdomen and moving the underlying soft tissues aside to access the spine
  • Removing all or part of a damaged disc
  • Widening the intervertebral space to make room for a bone graft and hardware
  • Placing a bone graft and hardware between two vertebral bodies

The two fused vertebrae may be further stabilized with rods and screws attached to the pedicles (bony projections on the back of the vertebral body). Over time, the bones should meld together.
