A Novel Technique for Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion

Dr. Mohr is continually researching, developing and implementing new surgical techniques to advance the treatment of degenerative spine conditions and help his patients achieve the best possible results. One example is the single-position prone lateral lumbar interbody fusion procedure, which vastly improves upon the traditional lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) procedure.

The LLIF procedure is often supplemented with a posterior pedicle screw fixation, particularly in cases of spinal instability or misalignment, such as spondylolisthesis. Typically, the surgery is performed in two stages. In the first stage, Dr. Mohr performs the interbody placement while the patient is in a lateral decubitus position. In the second stage, Dr. Mohr performs the posterior pedicle screw placement while the patient is in a prone position.

Because the LLIF procedure relies on multiple patient positions for interbody access, the patient must be moved from a lateral position to a prone position during the surgical session. In contrast, the single-position prone lateral interbody fusion procedure is completed with the patient in a prone position, eliminating the need to redrape and reposition the patient. This approach offers several key benefits, including streamlined access to the lumbar spine, superior surgical efficiency and reduced operative time.
